SILKYPIX Developer Studio 3 Beta Now Available

Those quirky but lovable folks over at Ichikawa Software, the same who are responsible for the developping engine in Pentax Pho Lab 3 software, have just released a new beta version of their famous SILKYPIX software. It's a free trial version for 30 days.

From the website: "SILKYPIX Developer Studio 3.0 Beta version, development result may be different from version 2 even though the same parameter is being used. The difference is the development engine."

So, they're faithful to their word and have got a much improved, new RAW developing processor under the hood. The graphic user interface is now a dark gray and is consolidated, so that it no longer requires as many open floating palettes. I really love this, though it is a bit slow redrawing when you resize the master window.

Some of the new tweaks include an improved application icon (SD for SILKYPIX Developer) that looks really nice on the Mac OS X dock as opposed to the colored old one. There's also new names within the various levels and settings, with some interesting English translations; for example under the sharpening control options you'll read "faint sharp for noisy scene" and "exaggerate sharp." The screen redraw is a bit slow if you have something less than a Core 2 Duo, but it's manageable. The rendering itself is exceptional, with fewer sharpening issues than I've ever seen. In the above image, I would have expected the ultra sharpening to bring out a lot of noise, but it wasn't as bad as it should have been. All in all, it's an impressive step forward. Hopefully, this is something we might see shipped in revisions to Pentax Lab software with future cameras. Though, there's no way the K10D will have this out of the box, even if it finally arrives in December.
